rapper.French Montana was born in Morocco North Africa. At the age of 13 he immigrated with his mother and his little brother to the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, leaving the rest of his family behind. In 2002 French Montana created the “Cocaine City” DVD imprint as a means to showcase his talent as an underground artist and a new voice from the New York streets. To gain a broader fan base, French incorporated interviews with major artists, as well as some up and comers. What started out as simply a medium for developing an audience quickly grew into one of the top selling “street DVD’s”, having sold nearly a million copies to date with national and international distribution. The international success of the DVD series helped to launch French’s rap career to an entirely new level. By creating and producing “Cocaine City,” French Montana evolved from an aspiring rapper in the streets of the Bronx, to the newest signee on platinum selling recording artist Akon’s record label, Konvict Music. By early 2009, French had flooded the streets with various mixtapes, including “Live from Africa,” “In Demand” with DJ Lazy K and “Laundry Man” with Evil Empire. His frequent collaborations with Harlem-bred rapper Max B have also helped keep a steady buzz, and helped fuel the success of the duo’s latest project, the mixtape/DVD combo “Coke Wave.” All togeather there have been 13 Cocaine City. Les Boukakes
Les Boukakes stand for music created in exile – for the perfect symbiosis of orient and occident. “Rock ‘n’ raï”, that’s how the six musicians from Algeria, Tunisia and France call their music style, a speedy mix of rock, raï, gnawa and châabi, which they catapulted within a few years from the streets and clubs of Montpellier onto the big festival stages and into the French radio charts. The success story of Les Boukakes starts in 2004 when they participated in the well known music competiton Printemps de Bourges. Celebrated as the new discovery of the festival, the European TV channel ARTE produces a documentary on the band touring throughout Europe and sharing the stages with famous musicians such as Manu Chao, Natacha Atlas, Rachid Taha or Femi Kuti. The exciting year 2005 was rounded up by the release of their second album Bledi which promptly resulted in an invitation to the biggest international World Music fair Womex in Newcastle, UK. With their fantastic concert – which the British magazine fRoots called the “Womex Hit” – Les Boukakes did not only convince numerous festival organisers but also made the rock legend Robert Plant dance and headbang to their music. A USA tour and many concerts at the biggest European World Music festivals followed. Finally the year 2006 culminated in a nomination for the BBC World Music Award 2007. After two successful years of touring Les Boukakes went back to the studio to work on their new album. On August 15th 2008 their third album "Marra" was released.Sourse http://www.atlasmusicpro.com

Wadih Mrad
Wadih Mrad´s real name is Garo Mrad Seferian. He was born in Kameshli, north of Syria, on the 15th of June 1974.He is Armenian in religion and his sign is Gemini.Wadih started his music life at the age of five. His first instrument was a piano. During his studies, he participated in many events and competitions between schools. In 1984, he was sent to Armenia as a tourist for one month through a scholarship. In 1989, he organized an orchestra for his school to participate in events with other schools. The majority of these events were for charity. In 1992, Wadih went to the military service for two years and a half. During this period, he met an Oriental orchestra where he discovered all the oriental instruments (Kanoun, Violin, Nay) and started practicing Arabic bitrates. After one year, in 1993, he organized his own Oriental orchestra of fourteen professional musicians. During his military period, Wadih got introduced to many people where he started singing in weddings, birthdays, engagement events and others.During the summer of 1995, Wadih´s military service was over and his fans were growing larger and larger. Many people started loving and adoring his voice all around the city. He went back to his village where he made his first concert. The concert was great deemed very successful and everybody was encouraging him to go further in his musical career.Wadih realized that his duties started growing as well, and that he had to proceed to create a better future, so he went studying Solfege in his village with a special private teacher who taught him the basics of "Al Makamat el Arabiyya" as well as how to play Oud.In summer 1996, he signed his first contract in a very
beautiful tourist green area known as "Mashta al Houlou" in Syria. The contract was with a restaurant called "Nabee el Aarous" that was a strategic touristic place for both Arab and European tourists. His fame started spreading in the Middle East region starting from Beirut, Egypt, Jordan, and Dubai in the Arab Emirates. In winter 1996, Wadih went to Sweden for two months where he found large number of fans mostly from the Syriac and Armenian religions (Al Jaliya). He made many concerts there and they were all another success to tell about. Winters and summers of 1997 and 1998 were a repetition of 1996.Winters were in Sweden and summers were in "Mashta el Helou".At the end of 1998, Wadih moved to Beirut where all the doors of fame were opened. He suffered for one year and a half in Beirut because he thought it was easy to start his career there. This was very difficult, on the other hand, because Lebanese people are very good listeners and the market was witnessing the birth of many singers and it was hard for one to prove himself quickly in the midst of such a mess. Finally, Wadih signed a contract with a Lebanese radio station and agreed that they will manage his business. He started singing in a night club called "Blue Velvet" in Kaslik in the Jounieh area under the name of "Garo" and the contract lasted for four months. The result of this hard work was that they offered him a song and supported it exclusively on air and he was obliged to change his name to "Wadih Mrad" to fit with his style of songs.Later on, the radio station produced an album of seven songs that included the single "Helweh el Denyeh" that lead him to the top charts. The album was entitled "Saket" and was produced by Music Master.
His contract with the radio station ended with lots of problems mainly related to money that is, till now, still to be settled still in court of law.Wadih signed his next contract with Rotana through a company based in Los Angeles named "Take 5 Music". The contract was for five years with Rotana but was broken after one album which is "Aashek Majnoun". The problem was related to the failure launching the album due to marketing reasons. The contract was ended on a friendly basis and Wadih realized that he must take full responsibility for managing his life and work by choosing the songs that fit his style because everybody was underestimating him. He felt that following the advice of others was ruining his life, dreams, future, and career that he believed in.In Christmas 2003, Wadih went to the United States where he had a tour in many states like Los Angeles, New Jersey, Detroit, Boston, etc. and every concert there was a success. The fans were singing his songs that they memorized, and Wadih realized that his songs were almost everywhere. This put more pressure and more duties on him with respect his fans, friends, and family.Later on, Wadih met a friend in New Jersey and they agreed to start a company to release a new album. The system was that the company will finance new albums which Wadih prepares with a lot of care and the result of this was a new album of eight songs under the name of "Waddaani el Habib". This new album promises to be a success because it has already spread all over the world including the Middle East, USA, Canada, Europe, etc. source http://wadihmrad.tv/biography/

Cheb Mami
Cover of Dellali
In 1982, the 16-year-old adolescent sang on the Alhan wa Chabab radio show, a singing competition organised by Radio Télevision Algérienne. He sang "El Marsam" (The Sanctuary) a classic of Oranese music from the 1920s. The audience was transfixed by the sheer emotion of his performance and by his concordant vocal intonations which captured perfectly the flavour of the song's title. The judges, who represented the government which refused to admit even the existence of raï, gave the first prize to the contestant that sang a cover version of a hit by the famous Egyptian diva, Umm Kulthum, but were forced to acknowledge the standing ovation Mami received by awarding him second prize.Cheb Mami was spotted by Boualem, the producer of the Oran label, Disco Maghreb, and the cassette waltz began. From 1982 to 1985, Cheb Mami recorded about ten cassettes, whose production varied from 100,000 to 500,000 copies[citation needed]It was in 1985 that Mami came to Paris and found his musical niche. Raï fused blues, funk, salsa, reggae, hip hop and Algerian rhythms, while integrating touches of his idols Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding and French rapper MC Solaar.Cheb Mami made his first official public appearance at the First Oran Raï Festival in 1985, which marked the official recognition of the genre by the Algerian authorities. He was in military service for two years in Algeria but was an entertainer on army bases. After that, in May 1989, Mami returned to the Paris at the Olympia, rejuvenating Rai music. He began making recordings and performing in cabarets in the Paris suburb of Barbès. He also toured the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Scandinavia and England.Mami's music is a blend of Mediterranean and Western influences including Turkish, Flamenco and Greek music as well as Latin music. His voice is tinged with Andalusian accents, and his music is an amalgamation of the traditional and the modern styles of singing and creation of music. In 1999, Mami topped the French pop charts with a groundbreaking duet with French rapper K-Mel, "Parisien du Nord". The song was an anthem against racism that seamlessly made the transition between hip hop and raï, and introduced throngs of young new audiences to raï. This song explores the racist issues between Arabs and French and the challenges of identity. As well as recording many straight raï songs, Cheb Mami has achieved crossover success with the hip-hop remix of his track "Parisien du Nord" on his album Meli Meli and also with the backing vocals on Sting's hit "Desert Rose" and Youm Wara Youm the title track of which is a duet with Samira Said .When Sting's album was released in 2000, the pair's duet, "Desert Rose", went rocketing to the top of singles charts around the world, fulfilling Mami's long-held dream of internationalising Raï sounds.Perhaps Mami's most successful recording is the album Dellali, produced by former Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers, which was released soon after his collaboration with Sting. The album's lead single was "Le Raï C'est Chic". This track, which opens the album, "is an energetic dance track featuring Mami's biggest fan, Sting, on backing vocals and is destined to get most of the mainstream media attention (and radio airplay)". Mami's first collaboration with Sting in 2001 on, "Desert Rose", "topped the charts around the globe, and led to television appearances on Saturday Night Live, the Today Show, Jay Leno, David Letterman, the Grammy Awards telecast and even a live performance at the Super Bowl". His international success, and namely his recognition in mainstream American popular culture, has led him to be called the "Prince of Raï".[2] Although Mami has been able to be recognized by mainstream media in the United States, Americans often equate his raï music genre with rock in the US during the 1950s and 1960s.[4] Americans believe raï to be "North African punk," a genre of music for the purpose of rebelling against the government and resembling the music of ‘young rockers’[4] in the US, when in reality this music plays a very different role in the life of the North African diasporic community in France. Although raï does include narratives of the various struggles of this community against "the Algerian state or against the forces of ‘tradition’",it is also the "music of the racialized Other" which chronicles struggles with racism and identity of North African people in France. Mami's international success is commendable and an indication of the power of his music; however, the misunderstanding of the roots of the raï music genre may allow the music to seem more relatable to international, especially American audiences.Wikipedia

Souad Massi (via last.fm)
Souad Massi ( b. August 23, 1972 ) is a singer and song writer from Algeria. She is a leading light among the young Algerian artists. She sings the Arabic language with a sweet and pure voice. Her songs are of folk rock rhythms (besides she is often compared to Joan Baez or Tracy Chapman). Her activism, popularity and courage brought her into the limelight.Souad Massi, is basically free and generous. She has a golden voice and a sparkling talent. She creates a delicate and harmonious Algerian folk rock with activist and sensitive lyrics. Souad comes from a family of performers. Her elder brother is a composer, her younger brother does new jack music and her little sister is a dancer…As for her, she always knew she would become a singer. She studied Arabo-Andalousian classical music, music theory and universal classical music. When she was 17, she performed on many stages with her only guitar. But at the same time, she was in a flamenco band "Les Trianas d’Alger". It was a real flop. After this defeat she went to pieces and decided to give up. Fortunately, her younger brother pushed her into going on. With her band "Atakor" Souad Massi travelled through Algeria. Their rock music (close to hard rock music) echoed in the whole country. But things became more and more difficult for Souad. Further to many political pressure, the cabinet of town and country planning she worked in (Souad has an engineer degree) decided to dismiss her. Then she has been through a difficult period, financially as well as psychologically. And while the young singer was just about to give up, she was offered to join in the “Femmes d’Algérie / Women from Algeria” Festival. This show which was initiated by Allalou (a former radio and television reporter) and the “Bled-Connection” association, set up in Paris at the Cabaret Sauvage. rest on http://www.africansuccess.org/visuFiche.php?id=537〈=en

Tarik
Hakim
Hakim was born in Maghagha, a small town in Al Minya, Egypt. Hakim grew up with the sound of working-class tradition of Sha'bi; the root of southern Egyptian. He became influenced by the great Sha'bi singer Ahmed Adaweyah and began practicing Mawals, the vocal improvisations which begin a traditional Sha'bi song. At fourteen years old he formed a band and started performing at local parties and school functions with the accompaniment of a tabla, duff, and an accordion, playing covers of classic Sha'bi hits by Ahmed Adaweya, Mohamed El Ezabi, and Abdel Ghani Al Sayed. Soon the band was a hit and expanded by adding keyboards and drums and performing all over the Minya province. His father, the mayor of Maghagha, wished that he would get a higher degree, and although Hakim loved singing, and wanted it to be his career, he bowed to his father’s wishes and attended the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, graduating in 1983 with a degree in communications. But while in the capital, he kept up his musical interests, meeting new people at the cafes on Mohammed Ali Street, including the accordionist Ibrahim El Fayoumi, who became like a god father to him.Hakim returned to Maghagha, this time to pursue his dream and formed a new modern band that blended Western, Middle Eastern, and oriental instruments for a fresh sound, and they quickly became Minya's most popular group. He returned to Cairo with a goal of making his living as a professional singer.Hakim's break came when he met producer Hamid El-Shaeri, and signed a deal with Sonar Ltd./Slam Records. With El-Shaeri at the board, Hakim entered the studio to make his first album, Nazra in 1991. The album was among the top of the charts, and the first pressing of the disc sold out within the first two months. Hakim took the unprecedented step of personally going to DJs and giving them copies of his tape, and his voice boomed from radios and shops all over Cairo. After the release of his second album Nar in 1994, Hakim was picked to represent Egypt at the Festival des Allumees in Nantes, France. Two years later a nomination for the Kora Award in the category of Best North African Singer confirmed his regal status (he won the award in 2000). Later he released Efred, the first of many collaborative efforts between himself, lyricist Amal El Taer, and composer Essam Tawfik. With 1998s Hakim Remix, he turned eight of his previously released hits over to British world/dance fusionists Trans-Global Underground (TGU), who then put their own spin on things. Although it proved to be the lowest-selling of his records in Egypt, it made a significant impact in Europe. It was a daring move, as Hakim had to maintain the right balance between tradition and innovation to keep his local audience happy, while moving towards global audience. The follow-up, 1999s Hayel, was a definite return to roots (and Egyptian popularity).Yaho, released in 2000, went over the million mark at homeland. Its original version was a huge success in the Middle East, having sold over 1 million copies, and brought him to the attention of Ark 21/Mondo Melodia founder Miles Copeland who first heard Hakim on a late night radio show on the BBC in London then spent the next day tracking him down and scouring record stores to get his hands on Hakim’s CDs. The result was signing with both Hakim and TGU. The U.S. version of Yaho was somewhat different from the Egyptian. In addition to four Trans-Global remixes, it included two brand-new songs, "Yemin We Shemal" by French producer Sodi and "Al Bi Hebeni Al". Yaho brought two smash hit singles in the Middle East, the title cut and "Esma Yalli", but it also brought Hakim to the attention of American audience.Hakim toured the U.S. in spring 2000 and Mondo Melodia announced plans to release the Live in Brooklyn album in the fall. Hakim's performance in Brooklyn was recorded for the double CD The Lion Roars- Live in America. The enhanced second CD also features a ten-minute video of Hakim and crew performing live in Egypt, so you can watch, as well as hear. Following the release of the live disc, Hakim went back into the studio and in May 2002, Talakik was released. Hakim partnered with Grammy winning producer Narada Michael Walden on 5 of the albums' 12 tracks and found himself working with TGU once more, who produced 2 tracks. Wanting to record something different for this new disc, Hakim hooked up with the Grammy Award winning, Merengue sensation, Olga Tanon on the breakout hit "Ah Ya Albi".
In 2004 he released his album El Yomen Dol including a duet track with the famous American Soul/Funk singer James Brown. In 2007, Hakim recorded the song "Tigy Tigy" with the Puerto Rican singer Don Omar. WIKIPEDIA

Mera Albee
Mera is a performer with multi-national appeal. The daughter of a Spanish father and Persian mother, she sings in five languages (Arabic, Farsi, French, Spanish, and English), dances, and combines the cultural traditions of the East with those of modern-day discos. Born in Spain, Mera moved with her mother to Tehran, Iran, when she was three and to the U.S. when she was 12. While attending school in Connecticut, she developed an interest in music and theater. In the early '90s, she formed a pop duo with another singer whose name also began with an M -- Melissa -- hence the duo's name: M&M. When Melissa decided to leave the business, Mera sought work on her own, appearing in small parts in films and in TV commercials in France and Japan. Her singing career received a boost when she met producer-composer Shad Rabanni in 1994. Rabanni's music fused Middle Eastern and Latin influences and seemed the perfect vehicle for Mera's vocal talents. Their collaboration resulted in Mera's 1996 debut album, Mera, and Sandstorm in 2001. Mera's song "Pol" was also included on the compilation Baila Habibi, Vol. II, while the video for her single "Albee" ("My Heart") was a success in France, receiving extensive airplay on MTV France. With the release of her second album in the summer of 2001, Mera embarked on a North American tour, seeking to bring her popularity to American dance music fans.http://www.emusic.com/artist/Mera-MP3-Download/11674202.html
