Cairokee
This Band was brought to life when Amir (vocal) and Hawary (guitarist) when they started singing in Arabic out of humour, really. They thought to themselves why not take it seriously and go Arabic all the way, since it’s their mother tongue while blending it with the Rock influences they have grown to love and admire: this created a really exotic and if nothing else.Is mainly playing rock but in an Egyptian lyrics and flavour, the name is aspired from both the words "Cairo" and "Karaoke" which means singing along with Cairo. The band first, started by the name “The Black Star” which means the Unseen Star, where they used to play English covers. But the band was seriously formed in the year 2003, ever since the band has performed live in various places. The idea of playing music and performing live was a childhood dream for all the members of the band.

Angham
Angham (born January 19, 1966) is an Egyptian singer, record producer and actress. Her debut was in 1987 under the guidance of her father, Mohammad Suleiman. She is the most successful vocal female artist in Egypt starting from the 1980s till nowadays. Following her divorce from Magdy Aref in 2000, Angham took much more control over her image and musical style after that “Leih Sebtaha” (Why Did You Leave Her) record established her into a strong position amid the constant emerge of new voices in the Middle East music scene. After a highly publicized feud between Alam elPhan Music Records’ president Mohsen Gaber and the artist , Angham moved to another record company, Rotana. In 2005, she released "Bahibbik Wahashteeny" (I Love You, I Miss You) record . The record was critically acclaimed, but commercially was not as expected. After a three years, Angham return to the forefront of Arabic pop music in 2007 with her hit record “Kolma N’arrab” (Whenever We Come Closer) which sold more than half a million CD across the Middle East in less than three months and was awarded a platinum certification.
Angham was named the best selling female pop artist in Middle East for the years 2000, 2001 , 2003, and 2007 . She is well-known for her vocal range, simplicity, melismatic style, and use of the whistle register. However, some critics have said Angham's efforts to showcase her vocal talents have been at the expense of communicating true emotion through song rather than showing her full vocal capacities. Jannat Mahid
Singing was in her blood since she was 5 years old, unlike children in her age playing with dolls; she used to listen to Umma Kalthoum, Abd El Wahab & many other great singers, she is the Star Jannat. She was raised in her family with her 3 brothers, where she wasn't just the only girl, but the youngest. She was always surrounded by their care and attention since she was the youngest & by this attention her family noticed that her ear in listening wasn't interested in kids’ songs as the kids in her age, she used to choose heavy songs and she started singing those songs. Her family then started supporting her specially her mother, who had herself a beautiful voice, but she only used it in singing for the family or in the family events. When she was 8, she participated in a singing competition in Morocco & stood on stage with a band and audience. Despite she was very young, she had no fear. Not only that, she won the first place in this competition. After that she participated in another 3 competitions in morocco & she one the first place, 1 in Alexandria & she also won the first place and the last one before she started her album was in Dubai shopping & tourism festival "Mahragan El Seyaha Wel Tasawok" & she also won the first place. She was then invited by Dr. Ratiba El Hefni as a guest of Horner to sing in the opening of the Arabic music Festival in the Opera. She paused for a while until she graduated from marketing. From there she started taking singing as a career & not just a talent; in 2004 she launched a single song in a Clip named "Efhamny Habibi". During that time the producer Ahmed Desouki was looking for new voices to introduce, he liked her voice so much & signed with her in 2005, since then, they had been working on her first album with Good News for Music "Elly Beiny W Beinak" till it had been launched in July 2006, it took them a year and a half preparing this album, as the producer Ahmed Desouki wanted her album to be a hit, it took them a lot of time & effort. It was really a hit. She shot "Aktar men sana" as the clip and the audiences say that her voice is so tender & warm & her feelings are high & this is reflected on the songs & her voice. The album has a total of 10 songs, a mix between love, sadness & being hurt & songs to show a strong woman. She's also shot another song from her album called "Bahebak" with the director Mohamed Gomaa. She launched two singles in Collection “Good News Vol-1” called “Habeby Ala Neyato” & “Alek Beeh” in July 2008. She is now working with Producer Ahmed El Desouki on their second album together which will be released on 2009.

Oumeima El Khalil
Image by hyperbolic pants explosion via Flickr
El Khalil pursued her secondary studies in the Bekaa, and then moved to Beirut where she studied music theory and vocal techniques.
Meeting Marcel Khalifé at an early age was a good occasion for Oumeima to venture into the world of singing as it gave her the opportunity to sing as a solo in his "Al Mayadin" band where she showed a high level of professionalism in the domain.
The 12-year old girl had her own songs that she interpreted worldwide for over 27 years at high-level concerts in which Marcel Khalifé and his band participated.

Asalah Nasri
Asala was born in Damascus, Syria to a middle class couple. Mostafa Nasri, Asala's father, was a revered Syrian composer and singer who recognized her singing talent early on and launched her singing career. She was very attached to her father who taught her to love music. Her infatuation with music entertained her through her childhood, she was much more content with the radio than a doll. Asala began her musical career by performing patriotic, religious, and children's songs when she was four years old. She sang the theme song, Qessas Al Sho'oub (Arabic: قصص الشعوب), of the cartoon show, Hekayat Alamiyah (Arabic: حكايات عالمية). In 1986, Mostafa Nasri died after suffering from internal bleeding caused by a car accident. The untimely passing of Asala's father caused her great grief and she left singing and took up her duties as the eldest child. At the young age of seventeen, she took care of her siblings, Reem, Amani, Ayman and Ayham with her mother.Asala's commercial musical career debuted in 1991 with Law Ta'rafou (Arabic: لو تعرفو). The album had 4 songs in the oriental operatic tarab style. The album was an instant hit with heartbreaking songs like Ya Sabra Yana and Samehtak Ketir. She quickly cemented her presence in a growing industry brimming with new, young talent like Najwa Karam, Saber Rebai, Angham, and Abdelmajeed Abdullah.WIKIPEDIA

Cheb Mami
Cover of Dellali
In 1982, the 16-year-old adolescent sang on the Alhan wa Chabab radio show, a singing competition organised by Radio Télevision Algérienne. He sang "El Marsam" (The Sanctuary) a classic of Oranese music from the 1920s. The audience was transfixed by the sheer emotion of his performance and by his concordant vocal intonations which captured perfectly the flavour of the song's title. The judges, who represented the government which refused to admit even the existence of raï, gave the first prize to the contestant that sang a cover version of a hit by the famous Egyptian diva, Umm Kulthum, but were forced to acknowledge the standing ovation Mami received by awarding him second prize.Cheb Mami was spotted by Boualem, the producer of the Oran label, Disco Maghreb, and the cassette waltz began. From 1982 to 1985, Cheb Mami recorded about ten cassettes, whose production varied from 100,000 to 500,000 copies[citation needed]It was in 1985 that Mami came to Paris and found his musical niche. Raï fused blues, funk, salsa, reggae, hip hop and Algerian rhythms, while integrating touches of his idols Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding and French rapper MC Solaar.Cheb Mami made his first official public appearance at the First Oran Raï Festival in 1985, which marked the official recognition of the genre by the Algerian authorities. He was in military service for two years in Algeria but was an entertainer on army bases. After that, in May 1989, Mami returned to the Paris at the Olympia, rejuvenating Rai music. He began making recordings and performing in cabarets in the Paris suburb of Barbès. He also toured the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Scandinavia and England.Mami's music is a blend of Mediterranean and Western influences including Turkish, Flamenco and Greek music as well as Latin music. His voice is tinged with Andalusian accents, and his music is an amalgamation of the traditional and the modern styles of singing and creation of music. In 1999, Mami topped the French pop charts with a groundbreaking duet with French rapper K-Mel, "Parisien du Nord". The song was an anthem against racism that seamlessly made the transition between hip hop and raï, and introduced throngs of young new audiences to raï. This song explores the racist issues between Arabs and French and the challenges of identity. As well as recording many straight raï songs, Cheb Mami has achieved crossover success with the hip-hop remix of his track "Parisien du Nord" on his album Meli Meli and also with the backing vocals on Sting's hit "Desert Rose" and Youm Wara Youm the title track of which is a duet with Samira Said .When Sting's album was released in 2000, the pair's duet, "Desert Rose", went rocketing to the top of singles charts around the world, fulfilling Mami's long-held dream of internationalising Raï sounds.Perhaps Mami's most successful recording is the album Dellali, produced by former Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers, which was released soon after his collaboration with Sting. The album's lead single was "Le Raï C'est Chic". This track, which opens the album, "is an energetic dance track featuring Mami's biggest fan, Sting, on backing vocals and is destined to get most of the mainstream media attention (and radio airplay)". Mami's first collaboration with Sting in 2001 on, "Desert Rose", "topped the charts around the globe, and led to television appearances on Saturday Night Live, the Today Show, Jay Leno, David Letterman, the Grammy Awards telecast and even a live performance at the Super Bowl". His international success, and namely his recognition in mainstream American popular culture, has led him to be called the "Prince of Raï".[2] Although Mami has been able to be recognized by mainstream media in the United States, Americans often equate his raï music genre with rock in the US during the 1950s and 1960s.[4] Americans believe raï to be "North African punk," a genre of music for the purpose of rebelling against the government and resembling the music of ‘young rockers’[4] in the US, when in reality this music plays a very different role in the life of the North African diasporic community in France. Although raï does include narratives of the various struggles of this community against "the Algerian state or against the forces of ‘tradition’",it is also the "music of the racialized Other" which chronicles struggles with racism and identity of North African people in France. Mami's international success is commendable and an indication of the power of his music; however, the misunderstanding of the roots of the raï music genre may allow the music to seem more relatable to international, especially American audiences.Wikipedia

Her songs are of folk rock rhythms (besides she is often compared to Joan Baez or Tracy Chapman). Her activism, popularity and courage brought her into the limelight.Souad Massi, is basically free and generous. She has a golden voice and a sparkling talent. She creates a delicate and harmonious Algerian folk rock with activist and sensitive lyrics. Souad comes from a family of performers. Her elder brother is a composer, her younger brother does new jack music and her little sister is a dancer…As for her, she always knew she would become a singer. She studied Arabo-Andalousian classical music, music theory and universal classical music. When she was 17, she performed on many stages with her only guitar. But at the same time, she was in a flamenco band "Les Trianas d’Alger". It was a real flop. After this defeat she went to pieces and decided to give up. Fortunately, her younger brother pushed her into going on. With her band "Atakor" Souad Massi travelled through Algeria. Their rock music (close to hard rock music) echoed in the whole country. But things became more and more difficult for Souad. Further to many political pressure, the cabinet of town and country planning she worked in (Souad has an engineer degree) decided to dismiss her. Then she has been through a difficult period, financially as well as psychologically. And while the young singer was just about to give up, she was offered to join in the “Femmes d’Algérie / Women from Algeria” Festival. This show which was initiated by Allalou (a former radio and television reporter) and the “Bled-Connection” association, set up in Paris at the Cabaret Sauvage. rest on http://www.africansuccess.org/visuFiche.php?id=537〈=en
