Morocco is a funny country, the King is screwing up the country yet many view him as untouchable, because he claims to come from a great lineage. People kiss his hand and his leg seeking blessings form this Royal who seems to be doing a better job in warning his people of the dangers of the alternative.
While the King is generous and promoter of free speech. Among his guests on this summer music festivals are Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey traveled to Marrakesh to perform at the popular music festival. They were kind and thanked King Mohammed VI for having them over. I am certain he used all those money from programs dedicated to the poor to make rich people even richer.
But if you are a local celebrity--you do not get to be invited. Such frustration has been expressed by a number of Morocco's finest talents including Hoda Saad who complained about this just last week. But not being invited is not a bad thing, being imprisoned and tortured is not cool.
WE have written many times about one local rapper who sang On Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death, the forthcoming album from dissident Moroccan rapper El Haqed “the Enraged”—one
Called “El Habs,” or “Prison,” the song features lyrics that are particularly poignant now that El Haqed—otherwise known as Mouad Belghouat, a 25-year-old Casablanca kid—is serving a one-year jail sentence for a music video and song, “Dogs of the State,” that allegedly insulted Morocco’s infamously corrupt police. The refrain is—like most of El Haqed’s lyrics—a challenge to the authorities.
Such a bogus charge that means so many things and thus, a talented young man is being put behind bars , but the world is taking notice of his struggle. He is not the only one to have it though as earlier this week, the United Nations issued a scathing report on human-rights abuses against dissidents in Morocco. It included accounts of sexual assault perpetrated on men involved in the democracy movement, and other horrific tortures.
A young lady whose name is Maria Karim, a 32-year-old Moroccan activist who co-produced El Haqed's album is also in legal trouble for having allegedly insulted the authorities, is working on borrowed time to get El Haqed’s message out to Moroccans and, she hopes, to the world and so far she seems to have done a good job of it. El Haqed is more Moroccan than his prisoners.
So please, if the King of Morocco gives you a call, skip that conversation! And tell them you will show up when they stop locking up people for singing.

Moroccan songstress Laila Ghofran invested in an Egyptian restaurant in Morocco. She flew from Egypt to launch the restaurant in a first non music activity. The idea came to her as she was looking into starting up a business. She does not find Egyptian food in Morocco so she hired two Egyptian chefs to bring the authentic flavors to the Maghreb. In other news, Laila has a new album that should be released in time for Eid- Al Adha.
Rumors that Nancy Ajram will be the next judge on Arab Idol Season 2. Ragheb Alama tweeted the rumor which Nancy Ajram re-tweeted to her followers. Not sure if Nancy will be replacing on of the four judges and if so who would it be?
X-Factor is looking for a judge and it seems Iraqi songstress Shatha Hassoun has thrown her hat in the race for the post. X-Factor is the only Western show that has not been adapted in Arabia. Shatha has not confirmed or denied the news, but she is getting a new manger whose former clients included Rashid Al Majid.
Fayrouz Karawya will be headline a concert in the Egyptian House of Opera on October 19, 2012. The concert will be held in the open air pavilion. The songstress will perform her new songs from "Baram Menny", the delightful album that took six years to make.
The Arab legend and master of Lebanese song Wadih Al Safy is recovering in a Beirut hospital. He is out of the ICU and has been receiving droves of visitors in his hospital suite. Wadih is a survivor who meants a lot to different people. We wish him well.
She is a diva in every sense of the word. Sure, she is young, but her emotions are her vocal training some spend ages trying to develop. She has the confidence at a level only the legends enjoy. Her commanding stage presence is well documented. This Casablanca native, the girl that rocked Arab Idol and was only given the runner up title is taking a break to sort out her career plans.
She did released a number of singles that I call crowed pleasers, but an album has not materialized yet--which is a good step. Last thing the fans need a rushed album that has not been made with hear and soul. One cannot rush greatness, Dounia has a career that's shorter than one year--she auditioned on September 8, 2011
In those few months Dounia performed in a number of dialects and various styles from classic Egyptian songs (Umm Kulthum, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, Warda, Faiza Ahmed), to Arabic pop music (Samira Said, Fulla, Najwa Karam, Asala Nasri) and Gulf music (Ahlam, Mohammed Abdu, Talal Maddah) She has also dabbled so well into Gulf music.
After the show, Saudi singer Rashed Al-Majed was quoted about her voice was "rare". She has done well for herself where received a beautiful Mercedes, more expensive that the Chevrolet Corvette that was among Arab Idol's awards. This was a gift from a group of fans from United Arab Emirates.
Dounia has been a fixture in Morocco's music festival where she tends to get booked often, the Gulf has also called, they seem to big among her biggest fans out there.
Naima Samih is an icon in the world of Moroccan songs, she is one of its early pioneers. She entered the singing business when there was only men in that industry, she sang and impressed people. Thus she earned her stripes in this traditional society. She had to struggle with the men of her family so lunch her career, she did start in the late sixties and flourished in the early seventies.
At first she sang with no music to avoid upsetting the religious folks as she was no in position to battle them. She owned the local Moroccan song and took it into new territories. The slower song is her shtick. Among her most known hits is Jarabit We Jareet a song that deserves to be heard by more people--no different that Warda or Mayada really.
She is a mixture of Arab and north African tribes, she continues to make music and live in a small town. She is a frequent guest in local music festivals.
Let's get one clear, she is not leaving the music scene anytime soon, but when a friend ask her to wear some of his fashion designers, she could not say no!
Moroccan singer and former Star Academy participant Tahra was approached by her friend and home girl fashion designer Nisreen Elyahy to model some of her latest designers. Tahra did not hesitate and this looks like a gorgeous collaboration all around. Tahra has the height, the lean figure, and the that pleasant look and features.
Nisreen is not a new comer to the fashion game, other Arab celebrities have wore some of her designs including including Susan Bader, Somya Khashab, Carol Samah, Hasna Zalagh, Nabeela Abid and the list goes on
The couple of the decade is Tamer Hosny and his bride Bassma Boussil showed up to a birthday party together and the new went on a frenzy. The pictures of the couple have gone viral and they seem to confirm the rumors and statements about their marriage.
An Egyptian entertainer (Majid Al Masry) had a birthday party for his kid, and the couple made their first social appearance since the announcement of their wedding. Confirming once again, Arabs really love blondes. The party was in Al-Masa Hotel garden and a number of stars have turned out for the party.
Iraqi composer singer and now reality TV star Kazem Al Saher is a charmer, he is well known for his touching and epic romantic songs. He has been in the business for 20 plus years and he have had dozens of hits and many great albums. He is not a guy who likes to talk too much about himself in interviews and such he seems like a down to earth guy. But in his music video he holds nothing back, always with gorgeous ladies.
He is a happily married man with a lovely family and a recent grandchild given to him by his older son Wissam. This family man has had many musical collaborations with lead female artists. Sometimes he has loaned them his music, sometimes he would sing with them on stage. Let's take a look at some of his most famous lady muses:
Latifa from Tunis, she was the first lady Kathem Al Saher has worked with. He has sang with her and has composed songs for her. She was a huge name and he was starting up his career then. They are best of friends. كاظم الساهر /البرت هول 1997 / ياقدس
Egyptian songstress Ghada Raghab was next on the list. Kathem has comended her voice and has given her a musical piece. It was a lovely collaboration from a guy who has been around the block and a new voice then. لمـــــاذا ؟ - غادة رجب كاظم الساهر غاده رجب - ابعد عني
Magida El Roumy is a huge star and has sang a number of poems by Syrian poet Nizar Qabbany--the go to guy for many of Kathem's gorgeous songs. Magida wanted to collaborate with Kazem so he gave her one of his best musical work to date--she added it to her 2012 album. Kathem was jazzed up about his collaboration and has spoke about it for a really long time وعدتك - ماجدة الرومي & كاظم الساهر & نزار قباني (HQ) كاظم الساهر وعدتك ماجدة الرومي
Asma Laminawar, then, she was a local singer with a lot of talent. She had the local fame, but on the pan Arab music radar, she was unnoticed. They did a song together in early 2007-2008 and then they performed it on stage in Morocco. It was an instant hit, so Kathem doubled down and did another song with this Moroccan delight in his 2009 album. Again it was one of the finest songs for that year, a classic. كاظم الساهر و اسماء المنور اشكو اياما المحكمة كاظم الساهر اسماء المنور
The Moroccan songstress Mona Amarcha has yet to hold a concert outside the Gulf region where her career has been transformed from a celebrity singer into a wedding singer. After taking part of the Star Academy competition years ago, she made a decision not to go back to Morocco, not to Egypt and certainly not to Lebanon. Instead she followed the money and made a home for herself in Dubai.
She is a big player in the pop scene in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and in between. She makes good music and has a great voice. But if she is not getting paid, she is not singing. That means she has yet to release a song in Egyptian or the Lebanese dialect.
She does not seem to care about branching our or at least maintaining her celebrities status outside Dubai where she does concerts and private events. She does go back to Morocco for vacation with her lovely family and friends. But the only place she works is Dubai
Again the money is great we all love it, it's just the attitude that matters. She can make a decent living doing songs by this Sheikh and that poet, but to last you need to cover your tracks and open up new markets.
The romantic butterfly of Moroccan and Arab pop has good news to share---she is now officially no longer single. The lucky guy is a follow Moroccan businessman who loves and respects the songstress. Congratulation! We hope he embodies all those songs Sofia has released throughout her career. And I know I certainly hope he is her first.
We look forward to her latest music video that was filmed in Dubai and comes in the Egyptian dialect.
Sofia remains one of the smartest and most talented pop singers in the show biz as she sounds angelic in Arabic, French and in English.
While the news has not been officially confirmed, fans of the Egyptian pop star have released a song to celebrate the unconfirmed rumors of his wedding to Bassma Boussil. It's a karaoke song that uses some lines from a Tamer Hosny song...has it ever happen to you
The voice behind this song is Ahmed Gamal--a nobody who is cheering his idol one. The song called on Tamer and Bassma it references their names and how they have manged to score one another. The topic aside this is a catchy beat, simple but catchy ringtone.
Will Tamer have the backbone to come out in public and say the words that he has gotten married? Is it cool for your fans to call your wife "Bint al eeh"? "Daughter of A Gun" Like you have used the line before too many times.
Rawad likes brand names, he is driving a Mercedes, wearing cool trendy gear, all to declare his intentions. He wants to get married and he is asking you folks to introduce him to her. He wants a sweet girl whom his parents would approve of. He does not have many pictures of his floating around the net--he should look into that.
Good manners, good looks, you gotta go with the Lebanese Rawad sings. Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Morocco all get a shout out in the song. Then the Arab Gulf gets its shout out too. Just marry an Arab girl that's the song if you could not find the Lebanese one It's a clever song to break into the show business. Arabs are suckers for such songs.
Rawad is a young and good looking lad, he would not find it hard to find a lady.
Elissa might have the heart of a child, Shatha Hassoun has that Iraqi bold boiling through her veins. When they cross paths, the world collide. We have heard the story about the two starlets staying in the same hotel--one had many fans out waiting for her, the other did not. The media caught win of the story, they made it a big deal.
In a Beirut concert, the media caught up with the Iraqi singer Shatha and spoke to her about her projects and upcoming events. Shatha is a talented singer with one of the most committed fans out there. Unlike many singers, she can claim two big Arab countries as her home...both Iraq and Morocco.
She is no fans of Elissa's and thinks that she has seen the history of that singer since she seems to pick fights with others. Shatha refused to say anything about the Elissa's new album--even though she has criticized the album cover before. I like both singers, they seem to do similar songs--Shatha does a bigger variety of songs than Elissa, but Elissa has a well established brand
Elissa remains silent on this matter, but Shatha is also smart, she said she likes some of Elissa's songs, not all of them. Keep in mind, both songstress work under the same Rotana label. Shatha and Elissa might not be the best friends out there, but whatever competition they have might help make their music better and their songs more real. شذى حسون: أليسا أثارت دمِّي العراقي
