Janine D

CairoImage via Wikipedia
Born in Beirut, the future "Janine D" grew up in the world of Art-Movie and Arabic Music. She was only six years old when her two parents Mounir (Egyptian) and Gladys (Lebanese) used to manage and own in Cairo. The hotel who became with time the most famous “Point de Rendez-Vous” for all singers and actors from the Arab world but also from Europe and even America. In the family’s Hotel, the future star yet still a young girl met and sang with many music stars or movie makers like Julio Eglesias, Dalida, Omar Sharif, Walid Toufic, Ragheb Alemeh, Hussein and Moudy El Imam, Adel Imam, and many, many more... This was also the place where many young Arabic artists, producers, yet unknown from the public, made their first steps and started their career.
From Cairo, the whole family moved to New-York, the most fascinating cosmopolitan city in the world, Mecca of music, art and fashion, a city bubbling with life and ideas. Moreover, New-York is the city of the largest musical diversity where music of all kinds converges, where artists coming from all over the world rush to accomplish their secret dream and to one day become a star. She was gifted by nature with a voice-of-a-kind, one extremely warm and full of Mediterranean character, obviously enough powerful to one day integrate and mix in total harmony different sounds, different musical languages. To gain such feature, the future artist has worked hard perfecting her singing technique in the prestigious Herbert Berghof Conservatory where she studied art & musical theater and from which she finally graduated. Yet, our future star remained authentically oriental and though couldn’t limit herself just to her exceptional voice and singing technique so she worked even harder on dancing and acting enabling her body to absorb all types of rhythms and to exhale strength and sensuality.Living in city like New York, the future star evolved and has progressively absorbed many types of music. She became familiar with styles of dozens of most talented musicians and art professors who cultured her to blend her signature sound by composing her own music and her own lyrics and also to confront crowds during number of live-concerts she performed in New-York and in many other US or western-European cities, revealing an incredible power and talent to communicate with crowds or audiences. Last but not least, our future star understood better all the different aspects of the music industry of both art-creation and production: lyrics, music, mix, arrangement, mastering, photos, clips, marketing and brand-recognition, live-concert features, choreography….In total, the future star has spent 12 years of her life in New-York and this is where she became "Janine D".
In 2003, "Janine D" decided that time has came for her to “move back to the East” and to present herself to the Arabic public as an authentic Egyptian-Lebanese artist.
“When focusing on the craft of performing and songwriting, I always wanted my voice to shine through…But to me, relevance means above all staying honest about what you are…The most important thing for me as an Artist is maintaining my authenticity”.(Janine D).With that thoughts in her mind, "Janine D" decided to carry a genuine but challenging approach for presenting her oriental music, where sensuality goes with self-confidence and professionalism and where female artists would not be anymore presented to the public through bunch of “clichés” but where they would be giving a new image, as an acceptable synthesis between the necessary requirement of a modern life and their old traditional yet authentic values.http://fi-fi.facebook.com/pages/Janine-D/52203124848

Later, Ayman became well known and famous not only in Lebanon but in the Arab world as well during his 8 years of singing and playing the “OUD”.Fame drew Ayman to become more self-focused and deeply involved with drugs. He made up his mind that God does not exist so that he could live as he pleased. However, Ayman wasn’t satisfied with this way of living. One day he challenged God, “I will read the Bible five times. In return I expect you to make my next overseas concert successful.”God was more faithful than Ayman. As Ayman read the Bible, he discovered that he could not please God by doing good deeds. ”I was amazed to learn that God loves me the way I am, even though I am a sinner. That is why He sent Jesus to die and pay the penalty for my sin, for it is written ‘the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord’. The Bible also showed me that God also wanted to renew my life and give me a heart of obedience and love.""One evening in the beginning of 1999 I was home by myself. I went on my knees and prayed "O God forgive me. I am a sinner. I do not deserve your love nor your being close to me. But I know you still love me. I ask you to help me. Free me and deliver me from what I am involved in. Change my life because I am not satisfied anymore in what I am doing and in a life of fame. Nothing is making me happy and I am not able to change my lifestyle."
"On that night Jesus entered my heart and there was a real change in my life. Within a week I left drugs, alcohol and smoking.""I tell you that in 1999 Ayman Kafrouny died and a new Ayman was born. A new Ayman who says ‘I am delighted to do your will O God and your law lives in me.’""If I was asked in the past what does music mean to you? I would have said to you, 'music is everything in my life'. But today, Jesus Christ is my life. Music is God's gift to me. He honoured me with it to be able to express my feelings. Today I use the gift of music to reflect the miracle of how God transformed my life and how He can transform yours."http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=17989574036&id=19146060660&index=0

Malouma

Composers are a new phenomenon in the traditional music of many countries because, until recently, there was no need to compose new tunes when traditional life already with its own vast repertoire of songs for every occasion. But times are changing fast and new generations often feel the need to write new songs to reflect new situations. This is especially true in many African countries, like Mauritania , the home of Malouma Mint Moktar Ould Meidah.

She was born in the 1960s into a family of famous griots from the harsh, desert region of Trarza. By the age of 15, Malouma was already an accomplished griot herself but as her adolescence progressed, musical curiosity prompted her to look beyond the traditions of her Moorish people. She began listening to Egyptian and North African music but also blues and pop from the US and Europe. On reaching adulthood she settled into the predictable lifestyle of an obedient wife, until the late 1980s when she began to perform again. Her new songs, with their contemporary modern feel, provoked a major revolution in Mauritanian music. Their themes of love, life, inequality, social justice, AIDS, illiteracy and the rights of women also challenged deeply ingrained taboos, a fact which initially sullied her name amongst a small clique of big- wigs, griots and decision makers. But her courage and all too obvious musical talents eventually won most people over to her cause, and she's now considered as one of Mauritania's greatest cultural treasures. Her recent album 'Dunya', on the Marabi label, is a veritable West African gumbo of traditional sounds, and modern bluesy licks, all expertly conceived, arranged and recorded.

From the mys tic sounds of Harem, to the fluid ambi ence of Passion, this concept album soundly succeeds in genre-defining.

Outlandish

Outlandish is a Danish hip-hop group with an international touch. Formed in 1997, it consists of Isam Bachiri (born in Denmark and of Moroccan background), Waqas Ali Qadri (born in Denmark and of Pakistani background), and Lenny Martinez (born in Honduras). All three members are religious, with Isam and Waqas being devout Muslims, and Lenny being at least nominally catholic.
Their R&B/Hip-hop/Rap/soul music takes influences from their various backgrounds (Arab, Pakistani, and Latin music), and although their songs are primarily in English, they usually feature lyrics in Spanish, Urdu, Arabic, and Danish. All these influences make the music of Outlandish somewhat unique and this is easy to notice from the variety of genres covered in their albums. Outlandish often include themes about Islam and contemporary issues facing young Muslims in the west in their music, and sometimes their songs define a nasheed-like unique genre. Last.fm
