Malikah

Lebanese Queen of Rap Lynn Fattouh, known as Malikah. Born in Marseille, France in 1986, Malikah is a Lebanese Algerian raised in Beirut. What makes her a unique Arab rapper, singer, and MC, that stands out in the industry, is that she is not only a female but she also raps fluently in Arabic, English, and French. “I have a collaboration track on Aks’seir’ album, that was released a couple of years ago where I rap in French and Arabic (Algerian accent),” she said. This track was the retake of the famous Abdel Kader for Algerian Singer Cheb Khaled.
Malikah describes her “2 personalities” when it comes to music. “Malikah is the rough, serious, hardcore, Arabic woman who raps about politics, religion, and social issues; and MC Lix is my alter-ego, the feminine, sexy lady who is more commercial and talks about love, friendship and so on,” she added.Malikah first hit the Lebanese hip hop scene in 2003 when she performed in front of a number of Lebanese Male rappers at the “Peak Hall,” Lebanon. “Back then, I had to cover my face because my parents were against me rapping,” she said. She secretly continued doing her thing until she was asked to perform on Lebanon’s Future Television show “Zaven” in 2003. “This is where I had to face my parents. Eventually we spoke and made a deal that they would let me do my music as long as I keep up with school,” she explained. Three years later Malikah started MC’ing.

Rima Khcheich

Beautiful Land/Beirut, LebanonImage by Sorgul©® via Flickr
Rima Khcheich, a Lebanese singer, was born in 'Khiam', South Lebanon, in 1974.She started singing Classical Arabic music at the age of nine, and was awarded the bronze medal at the 'Bizert Festival for the Mediterranean Song' in Tunisia, 1985.Rima's singing career started off with the children's choir at the 'Arabic Cultural Club', and later evolved into a solo performance with the 'Beirut Oriental Troop for Arabic Music' under the supervision and direction of Maestro Salim Sahab.Rima studied the tradition of classical Arabic singing at The Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music' in Beirut, and her efforts were supported by her father Kamel Khcheich who encouraged her to memorize and master classics from the Arabic music heritage like *Muwashahat, Adwar and other styles. She has performed Zakariah Ahmad, Al-Kassabji, Sayyed Darwish, Kamel Al Khal'i and Muhammad Abdel Wahab, amongst others.Having participated in various concerts in Lebanon and around the world, Rima has gained international repute and admiration for her gift at performing complex Arabic classical forms such as Dor 'Emta El hawa', and Muwashah 'Anta al Mudallal'.Currently, Rima teaches Oriental singing at the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music and is invited on a yearly basis to Massachusets, USA where she teaches voice and classical Arabic singing at Mount Holyoke College under the framework of the Arabic Music Retreat program directed by renown musician and composer Simon Shaheen. Her professional collaborations include performing with Simon Shaheen, singing in renown composer Toufic Farroukh's album 'Tootya' released in 2006, and being an integral part of the Dutch-Lebanese- Iraqi band 'Orient Express'. This band tried to create meeting grounds between the Arab musical heritage and Jazz. The band released one album 'Orient Express' in 2002, of which this live recording documents their musical experimentations. In 2006, Rima Khsheish released her debut solo album, entitled 'Yalalalli' which features a number of old songs and Muwashahat, that she performs in a personalized, contemporary manner, alongside new compositions.A showcase of Rima's limpid voice, 'Yalalalli' not only reveals a deeply emotional and original musical expression, it also stands as a note of rebellion against the dictates of the commercial music market.
* Muwashahat: plural for Muwashshah, a vocal form in Arabic music.
A strophic song with refrain. The form originated at Cabra, near Cordoba, in the 9th century; it enjoyed a vogue in Muslim Spain in the 11th century, and spread subsequently throughout the Arab world, where it survives in oral tradition.
One of seven post-Classical poetic forms, It is performed on both secular and religious occasions and combines classical metres with new ones arranged in strophes. Each poem is divided into an indefinite number of units (abyat, sing. bayt), each containing a varied number of poetic lines. Musically, a muwashshah is performed by a solo singer alternating with responsorial, antiphonal or collective singing in unison, depending on the performing group. The performance of this difficult art, composed by specialists, demands a mastery of both maqams (modes) and usuls, the complicated rythmic patterns of Arabic music.

Janine D

CairoImage via Wikipedia
Born in Beirut, the future "Janine D" grew up in the world of Art-Movie and Arabic Music. She was only six years old when her two parents Mounir (Egyptian) and Gladys (Lebanese) used to manage and own in Cairo. The hotel who became with time the most famous “Point de Rendez-Vous” for all singers and actors from the Arab world but also from Europe and even America. In the family’s Hotel, the future star yet still a young girl met and sang with many music stars or movie makers like Julio Eglesias, Dalida, Omar Sharif, Walid Toufic, Ragheb Alemeh, Hussein and Moudy El Imam, Adel Imam, and many, many more... This was also the place where many young Arabic artists, producers, yet unknown from the public, made their first steps and started their career.
From Cairo, the whole family moved to New-York, the most fascinating cosmopolitan city in the world, Mecca of music, art and fashion, a city bubbling with life and ideas. Moreover, New-York is the city of the largest musical diversity where music of all kinds converges, where artists coming from all over the world rush to accomplish their secret dream and to one day become a star. She was gifted by nature with a voice-of-a-kind, one extremely warm and full of Mediterranean character, obviously enough powerful to one day integrate and mix in total harmony different sounds, different musical languages. To gain such feature, the future artist has worked hard perfecting her singing technique in the prestigious Herbert Berghof Conservatory where she studied art & musical theater and from which she finally graduated. Yet, our future star remained authentically oriental and though couldn’t limit herself just to her exceptional voice and singing technique so she worked even harder on dancing and acting enabling her body to absorb all types of rhythms and to exhale strength and sensuality.Living in city like New York, the future star evolved and has progressively absorbed many types of music. She became familiar with styles of dozens of most talented musicians and art professors who cultured her to blend her signature sound by composing her own music and her own lyrics and also to confront crowds during number of live-concerts she performed in New-York and in many other US or western-European cities, revealing an incredible power and talent to communicate with crowds or audiences. Last but not least, our future star understood better all the different aspects of the music industry of both art-creation and production: lyrics, music, mix, arrangement, mastering, photos, clips, marketing and brand-recognition, live-concert features, choreography….In total, the future star has spent 12 years of her life in New-York and this is where she became "Janine D".
In 2003, "Janine D" decided that time has came for her to “move back to the East” and to present herself to the Arabic public as an authentic Egyptian-Lebanese artist.
“When focusing on the craft of performing and songwriting, I always wanted my voice to shine through…But to me, relevance means above all staying honest about what you are…The most important thing for me as an Artist is maintaining my authenticity”.(Janine D).With that thoughts in her mind, "Janine D" decided to carry a genuine but challenging approach for presenting her oriental music, where sensuality goes with self-confidence and professionalism and where female artists would not be anymore presented to the public through bunch of “clichés” but where they would be giving a new image, as an acceptable synthesis between the necessary requirement of a modern life and their old traditional yet authentic values.http://fi-fi.facebook.com/pages/Janine-D/52203124848
