Hakim
Hakim was born in Maghagha, a small town in Al Minya, Egypt. Hakim grew up with the sound of working-class tradition of Sha'bi; the root of southern Egyptian. He became influenced by the great Sha'bi singer Ahmed Adaweyah and began practicing Mawals, the vocal improvisations which begin a traditional Sha'bi song. At fourteen years old he formed a band and started performing at local parties and school functions with the accompaniment of a tabla, duff, and an accordion, playing covers of classic Sha'bi hits by Ahmed Adaweya, Mohamed El Ezabi, and Abdel Ghani Al Sayed. Soon the band was a hit and expanded by adding keyboards and drums and performing all over the Minya province. His father, the mayor of Maghagha, wished that he would get a higher degree, and although Hakim loved singing, and wanted it to be his career, he bowed to his father’s wishes and attended the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, graduating in 1983 with a degree in communications. But while in the capital, he kept up his musical interests, meeting new people at the cafes on Mohammed Ali Street, including the accordionist Ibrahim El Fayoumi, who became like a god father to him.Hakim returned to Maghagha, this time to pursue his dream and formed a new modern band that blended Western, Middle Eastern, and oriental instruments for a fresh sound, and they quickly became Minya's most popular group. He returned to Cairo with a goal of making his living as a professional singer.Hakim's break came when he met producer Hamid El-Shaeri, and signed a deal with Sonar Ltd./Slam Records. With El-Shaeri at the board, Hakim entered the studio to make his first album, Nazra in 1991. The album was among the top of the charts, and the first pressing of the disc sold out within the first two months. Hakim took the unprecedented step of personally going to DJs and giving them copies of his tape, and his voice boomed from radios and shops all over Cairo. After the release of his second album Nar in 1994, Hakim was picked to represent Egypt at the Festival des Allumees in Nantes, France. Two years later a nomination for the Kora Award in the category of Best North African Singer confirmed his regal status (he won the award in 2000). Later he released Efred, the first of many collaborative efforts between himself, lyricist Amal El Taer, and composer Essam Tawfik. With 1998s Hakim Remix, he turned eight of his previously released hits over to British world/dance fusionists Trans-Global Underground (TGU), who then put their own spin on things. Although it proved to be the lowest-selling of his records in Egypt, it made a significant impact in Europe. It was a daring move, as Hakim had to maintain the right balance between tradition and innovation to keep his local audience happy, while moving towards global audience. The follow-up, 1999s Hayel, was a definite return to roots (and Egyptian popularity).Yaho, released in 2000, went over the million mark at homeland. Its original version was a huge success in the Middle East, having sold over 1 million copies, and brought him to the attention of Ark 21/Mondo Melodia founder Miles Copeland who first heard Hakim on a late night radio show on the BBC in London then spent the next day tracking him down and scouring record stores to get his hands on Hakim’s CDs. The result was signing with both Hakim and TGU. The U.S. version of Yaho was somewhat different from the Egyptian. In addition to four Trans-Global remixes, it included two brand-new songs, "Yemin We Shemal" by French producer Sodi and "Al Bi Hebeni Al". Yaho brought two smash hit singles in the Middle East, the title cut and "Esma Yalli", but it also brought Hakim to the attention of American audience.Hakim toured the U.S. in spring 2000 and Mondo Melodia announced plans to release the Live in Brooklyn album in the fall. Hakim's performance in Brooklyn was recorded for the double CD The Lion Roars- Live in America. The enhanced second CD also features a ten-minute video of Hakim and crew performing live in Egypt, so you can watch, as well as hear. Following the release of the live disc, Hakim went back into the studio and in May 2002, Talakik was released. Hakim partnered with Grammy winning producer Narada Michael Walden on 5 of the albums' 12 tracks and found himself working with TGU once more, who produced 2 tracks. Wanting to record something different for this new disc, Hakim hooked up with the Grammy Award winning, Merengue sensation, Olga Tanon on the breakout hit "Ah Ya Albi".
In 2004 he released his album El Yomen Dol including a duet track with the famous American Soul/Funk singer James Brown. In 2007, Hakim recorded the song "Tigy Tigy" with the Puerto Rican singer Don Omar. WIKIPEDIA

Natasja Saad
Queen Latifah (via last.fm)
Natasja's first major hit, "Mon De Reggae," was inspired by the single "Pon de Replay" by Rihanna. Natasja was the first non-Jamaican reggae/dancehall artist ever to win the Jamaican "Irie FM Big Break Contest". Natasja entered the competition in May 2006: 700 contestants, 12 finalists, and one winner.Natasja debuted on film (but only as a singer) in the Danish comedy Fidibus directed by Hella Joof with the track "Op med ho’det". Around this time her song "Calabria" with DJ Enur was recognized and became a huge summer hit on Dance/Electronica and Pop charts across the world. It is her most popular song to date and it would give Saad her first US number one single on Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay chart in 2008 and in the process gave Saad the chart's first number one single by a posthumous artist. The song has also peaked at number twenty-four on the Billboard's Pop 100 chart.A few months after her death, in September 2007, her first album in Danish was released to critical praise. Natasja's vocals were recorded before her death, but the production was completed after her death. The CD, "I Danmark er jeg født", sold more than 80,000 copies making it double platinium.A year later her second album in English, "Shooting Star", was released. Among others it featured Dancehall superstar Beenie Man and long time friend Karen Mukupa."Calabria" was used in a Target Corporation television commercial that began airing in the summer of 2008.Natasja's "Gi' mig Danmark tilbage" was used in the Danish live-action short film "Grisen" (The Pig), which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2009.

Rachid Taha
Cover of Tékitoi
His breakthrough album as a solo artist was Diwân, featuring remakes of songs for the Algerian and Arab traditions. His album Tékitoi, produced by Steve Hillage and released in 2004, also brought him great acclaim and recognition from other rock musicians. In 2005 he performed with Robert Plant, Patti Smith and Brian Eno.
He covered The Clash song Rock the Casbah (in Arabic, as "Rock El Casbah"), which appeared in the 2007 film about Clash frontman Joe Strummer, The Future Is Unwritten.
Some critics attribute Taha's unique sound to his use of the mandolute, a mixture of the traditional oud with European fretted instruments. The song Barra Barra from his album Made In Medina was featured in the 2001 film Black Hawk Down as well as in the Games Convention 2008 trailer of the game Far Cry 2. Recently was featured in the 2007 film The Hunting Party. His song "Garab" from "Made in Medina" was used in the movie Blood and Chocolate in 2007.Wikipedia

Najoua Belyzel
Image via Wikipedia
Najoua originally studied law beginning in 2001 at the University of Nancy, but left for Paris to pursue a career in music. She met some success after a casting call when she joined the group Benoît, who had a successful single called "Tourne-toi Benoît", which touched on the subject of homosexuality. The later singles from the group, however, only met moderate success, and eventually the group parted ways.
Later she met the songwriter Christophe Casanave, whose work had already been performed by popular French acts Steeve Estatof and Marc Lavoine. The two worked together on a song called "Stella", which would later appear on her debut album.
The song "Née de l'amour et de la haine" was Belyzel's first demo in 2002.
In 2005, Najoua released her first single titled "Gabriel", an electric-pop dance track. The song became a huge hit in France, and peaked at number three on the Top 40 charts in France. It dealt with both homosexuality or even bisexuality and the impossible and pure love for an angel. The video was shot in an abbey. On 29 May 2006, she released her debut album titled Entre deux mondes, which debuted at #7 on the French charts and at #1 on the iTunes France music store. In late 2006 and early 2007, she embarked on a tour with other artists across France and Francophone Europe to promote her album. Two other singles were released, "Je Ferme les Yeux" in June 2006, which was also an electro-pop title but it met with less success than Gabriel. The theme was a prayer to God to make this world better. The third single was "Comme Toi" a song about duality and schizophrenia. The video clip featured two Najoua, a warrior-like Blond and a trapped Brunette. The album is mainly electro-pop with some ballads. It deals with many different themes such as love, friendship (Stella), war, pedophilia (Docteur Gel)her distress and disappointment when Najoua came to Paris (Bons Baisers de Paris)
Najoua Belyzel released a new single, "Quand revient l'été", on 10 September 2007.
She has been compared to Mylène Farmer, mainly because the video clip for Gabriel was shot in the same abbey as one of Mylene's clip "Je te rends ton amour) and because they write about similar themes, but Najoua says she never wanted to copy Mylene and that they both have their distinctive universes.During the Summer 2008 she released on the internet a cover song of Marie Laforêt Viens, Viens but it was not meant to be a a single. The real singer for her return is La Bienvenue. Some excerpts of the video clip were shown to the fans in December and the final clip was show on TV in February. The single became available on legal donwloading platforms on Frebruary the 13th. The song is about a girl who feels rejected in this world and who doesn't see the good in her. The video features a mannequin becoming alive (played by Najoua) but who is then disappointed by the cruelty of the world and finally decides to return to her previous state.Najoua's new album "Au Feminin" is to be released in May 2009, three years after the first one. It included a duet with Marc Lavoine called Viola as well as songs called Hey Hey Hey, Ma Sainte-Nitouche, La Trève... Her song Née de l'amour et de la haine is also included.Wikipedia
